Pickleball

The Sport Everyone is Talking About

Pickleball is rapidly gaining popularity around the globe, blending the best aspects of tennis, badminton, and table tennis. Played on a smaller court with a paddle and plastic ball, it is accessible to all ages and skill levels, making it one of the most inclusive sports today.

A Brief History of Pickleball

Pickleball was invented in 1965 on Bainbridge Island, Washington, by three friends: Joel Pritchard, Bill Bell and Barney McCallum. Originally created as a game for the whole family, it has since grown into a competitive sport with international tournaments. The sport’s distinctive name is said to come from “Pickle’s ball”, named after the Pritchard family's dog, Pickles, who loved chasing after stray balls.

How to Play Pickleball

The Court: Smaller than a tennis court, typically measuring 6 x 13 metres, with a low net across the centre.
Equipment: A lightweight paddle and a perforated plastic ball.
Rules: Matches can be played as singles or doubles. Points can only be scored by the serving side. A game is usually played to 11 points, and a player or team must win by a margin of 2 points.
Serving: Serves must be made underhand and hit diagonally into the opponent’s service court.
Tips for Beginners
  • Focus on the dink: Soft, controlled shots played close to the net can help you control the pace of the game.
  • Master the serve: A consistent, low serve can prevent you from giving away easy points.
  • Position yourself wisely: Stay near the non-volley zone, often called the “kitchen”, so you can react quickly to your opponent’s shots.
  • Play regularly: As with any sport, practice and repetition help improve both your reflexes and your overall game strategy.
Why Pickleball Is Perfect for Everyone
Pickleball offers a low-impact workout while helping to improve agility, balance and hand-eye coordination. It’s social, fun and suitable for both competitive and recreational play. Many communities now have pickleball courts in local parks and recreation centres, making it easier than ever to get involved.

Pickles and Pickleball? A Fun Connection
While pickleball has nothing to do with actual pickles, its playful name fits perfectly with our love of pickled foods. Both bring people together, create enjoyable shared experiences and are loved by people around the world.

Canada's Pickleball Boom Shows No Signs of Slowing

Pickleball has become one of Canada's fastest-growing participation sports. From community recreation centres to dedicated pickleball clubs, more Canadians are discovering the game every year. Its combination of accessibility, social interaction and friendly competition makes it appealing to players of all ages.
In many provinces, local leagues, tournaments and club events now take place throughout the year, helping to build a vibrant national pickleball community.

The Canadian National Pickleball League

For readers who want to follow the sport beyond their local court, the Canadian National Pickleball League (CNPL) has become the country's leading professional team competition. The league features teams from major Canadian markets and brings together some of the nation's top players.
Current CNPL teams include:
  • Toronto United Pickleball Club
  • Montreal Lions
  • Vancouver Owls
  • London Smash
  • Northern Lights
  • Grand River Rapids
  • Detroit-Windsor Drive
  • York Yeti
These franchises help showcase the growing competitive side of Canadian pickleball while inspiring new players across the country.

Pickleball Coast to Coast

One reason for the sport's popularity in Canada is its flexibility. Whether you're enjoying a summer game in British Columbia, playing indoors during an Ontario winter or joining a local tournament in Quebec, opportunities to get involved can be found across the country.
Many players are drawn to the sport because it combines elements of tennis, badminton and table tennis while remaining easy to learn. At the same time, advanced players appreciate the tactical nature of the game and the fast-paced rallies that emerge at higher levels.

The Perfect Match for Social Gatherings

Another reason Canadians have embraced pickleball is its social aspect. The sport encourages friendly competition, making it ideal for community events, club meetups and outdoor gatherings.
And while every great match deserves a winner, every great pickleball gathering deserves great food. After a few games on court, sharing snacks, burgers, sandwiches or fresh salads with friends is all part of the experience. Tangy gherkins, crunchy relishes and flavourful condiments can be an easy way to elevate these post-match moments.
